The sounds of Honolulu, Hawaii go back many years and todays music owes much to the original native peoples of the islands. One instrument which can be credited with creation on this beautiful island state is the ukulele (or "uke") a smaller, four-stringed version of the guitar. This instrument is very popular at the luau which is a Hawaiian feast - where music mixes with great conversation, laughs, and wonderful food. There is certainly nothing more Hawaiian than eating kalua pig, poi, poke, lomi salmon, opihi, and haupia while listening to the soft sounds of the ukulele.
There is, of course, many modern sounds and music in Honolulu as well - it is a melting pot of ethnicity and nationality and every group has included something in the mix. It is not uncommon to hear popular, mainstream, American music nearly everywhere you go as well as music from other countries with heavy influence - such as Japan. The story and sounds of Honolulu, Hawaii is complex and beautiful - much like the city itself.
